Questions about domain names

How long until I can use a new domain name that I just registered?

Written by Administrator
New domains and changes to domains may take up to 4-8 hours for .COM and .NET domains and about 24-48 hours for all other domain extensions to become effective. This is due to the number of networks involved, and the fact that several different agencies control those networks. This delay applies to all domains and all registrars.

Please allow for this delay when planning Web sites or configuring a domain to work with your email.

Can I change a domain name or get a refund if I misspelled it when I ordered it?

Written by Administrator
Unfortunately, we are unable to change or edit the spelling of a domain name after it has been registered. We try to register the domain exactly as you enter it. Should the registration succeed, you will be charged, even if the domain you entered was not what you actually intended to type.

However, you can forfeit the mis-spelled domain name and register another name.

How do domain names work?

Written by Administrator
A domain name works like an address forwarding service.

All of your Web site content sits on a computer with a unique address. This is called an IP address. An IP address is made up of a series of numbers, such as 123.23.234.45. Your domain name directs visitors to your site using this IP address.

We use domain names instead of IP addresses because most people find it easier to remember a name rather than a series of numbers.

How do I get a domain name?

Written by Administrator
To get a domain name, first you come up with a name you find suitable and then you make a search to find out wether it is available or not.If it is available then u can register it, otherwise you have to come up with an alternative. At NodeSix we make it easier for you by handling every step involved but you the client have the final say on what domain name is registered.

Should I enter valid contact information when registering a domain name?

Written by Administrator
ICANN, the governing body for domain names, requires valid Contact Information for each domain contact (Registrant, Technical, Billing, and Administrative).

If you enter false information, your domain name will be cancelled.

Your contact information is public and is made available through the WhoIs databases of most Registrars.

What happens when my domain registration expires?

Written by Administrator

Node Six automatically sends you consistent and timely expiration notices by email before your domain name expires and we follow them up with phone calls.

If the date of the expiration reaches and you have not renewed your domain name, it will automatically expire.

12 days after the domain registration has expired—the domain enters a redemption period, during which you may retrieve your domain name for an additional fee and renew it. The redemption period lasts 30 days.

One week into the redemption period, the expired domain—assuming that its registration has not been renewed—is placed into a 10-day domain auction, allowing prospective registrants to bid on the domain. The winner of the auction obtains the domain registration ownership two weeks after the auction end date if the original owner fails to renew the domain by the end of the redemption period.

Once the redemption period ends—and the domain has neither been renewed nor obtained through auction or backordering—the domain is deleted at the registry. The domain name re-enters the public pool of available domains, and it is no longer redeemable.

It is in your best interest not to let your domain name expire. You could lose a very valuable domain name that has been associated with you for years.

What is a domain name?

A name that is entered into a computer (e.g. as part of a Web site or other URL, or an e-mail address) and then looked up in the global Domain Name System which informs the computer of the IP address(es) with that name.

the product that registrars provide to their customers.
a name looked up in the DNS for other purposes.
The following example illustrates the difference between a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) and a domain name:
URL: http://www.example.com/
Domain name: example.com

What is a name server?

Written by Administrator
Name servers are the Internet's equivalent to phone books. A name server maintains a directory of domain names that match certain IP addresses (computers). The information from all the name servers across the Internet is gathered in a central registry.

This makes it possible for people across the Internet to access your Web site using a familiar domain name, instead of having to remember a series of numbers.
It usually takes about 4-8 hours for .com and .net before name servers on other networks are able to access the information after the central registry gets it. This period is referred to as the propagation period.

Who is a registrar and a registrant?

Written by Administrator
A domain name registrar is a company accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to sell Internet domain names. A registrant on the other hand is the person looking to register a domain with a registrar, in this case you the client that is seeking a domain name with NodeSix. NodeSix acts as the middle man between the client(registrant) and the registrar and helps you register your domain name hence keeping you away from the hustle involved therein.
